Why convert JPG to PNG

JPG is a lossy photo format with no transparency; PNG is lossless and supports an alpha channel. Converting to PNG stops any further quality loss and gives you a file you can edit or composite. The trade-off: a photo saved as PNG is usually larger than the original JPG. The conversion runs over HTTPS and needs no signup. We delete your files within 24 hours.

A JPG has no transparency, so converting to PNG won't create a transparent background. It only keeps the solid one that's already there. Expect a photo saved as PNG to be larger than the JPG.

Questions, answered

Short answers specific to this page. The tool above settles most of them in a second.

Will my JPG have a transparent background after converting to PNG?
No. JPG can't store transparency, so there's nothing to carry over. PNG supports it, but the converted file keeps the JPG's solid background. You'd have to erase it separately.
Why is the PNG larger than my JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly instead of discarding detail the way JPG does. For photos that means a bigger file; for graphics and screenshots the gap is smaller.
Does converting to PNG lose quality?
No. Converting to PNG loses nothing further; PNG captures the JPG exactly as it is. But it can't restore detail the original JPG already threw away.
