On October 28, 2026 we ran our reference photo through tinypng.com at its defaults, as a JPEG, as a PNG and through its WebP converter, then through our engine, and kept the exact bytes. PSNR and SSIM score each file against the original, higher is closer, and each file is checked for the pixels and the metadata it kept.

ImageOptim is a free, open-source Mac app. It compresses without losing quality by default, strips EXIF and GPS, and handles JPEG, PNG, SVG and animated GIF.
iLoveIMG is a toolbox: compress, resize, crop, convert, upscale, remove backgrounds and more, one tool per task, 30 files and 200 MB a task on the free plan.
Kraken.io offers lossy, lossless and expert modes, and an API that reads HEIC, AVIF and PDF. Its free web interface is small: 1 MB files, 20 per batch.

TinyPNG has run since before 2014, the year its FAQ says it added JPEG. The same FAQ says only you can access your uploads and that they are deleted after 48 hours at most. Blinkimg deletes files within 24 hours and strips GPS from every output by default.

Q:What is the best lossless image compression tool?
For true lossless, where every pixel stays identical, use a desktop tool such as ImageOptim on a Mac or Caesium on Windows. In Blinkimg, a PNG saved at Quality 100 is truecolour and lossless. Auto uses a colour palette instead, which is lossy but far smaller.
Q:How does TinyPNG image compression work?
By lossy compression tuned to each file, in TinyPNG's own words. For a PNG it combines similar colours, a technique called quantization, so a 24-bit PNG becomes a much smaller 8-bit indexed image with transparency kept. For a JPEG it re-encodes the photo to keep artifacts out of sight. Metadata is stripped from both. Blinkimg's Auto setting takes the same palette approach for PNG.

No. TinyPNG is a product of Tinify, a company in the Netherlands, and Blinkimg has no link to it. On PNG and WebP, yes, measured on the same photo on October 28, 2026: our PNG scored SSIM 0.9761 against 0.9715, our WebP 0.9780 against 0.9767, with higher PSNR on both. On the JPEG, TinyPNG kept slightly more detail and ours was 18.9% smaller.
Q:Does TinyPNG reduce image quality?
Slightly, by design. TinyPNG's compression is lossy: it reduces the colours in a PNG and re-encodes a JPEG, aiming for no visible difference. Blinkimg's Auto works the same way. When every pixel matters, set Quality to 100 in Blinkimg, and a PNG stays lossless.
Q:Can TinyPNG compress an image to a specific size in KB?
No. TinyPNG has no size field, so a form that wants a JPG under 100 KB means compressing, checking and trying again. In Blinkimg you type the number into Max file size. Our reference photo, a 576.8 KB JPEG, came back at 99.7 KB under a 100 KB cap and 48.7 KB under 50 KB.

Q:Does TinyPNG keep EXIF and GPS data?
No, by default. Its FAQ says TinyPNG removes all unnecessary metadata, which can also reset the DPI or colour profile, and its API can keep copyright, location and creation date. Blinkimg strips EXIF and GPS too, and keeps them when you untick Remove EXIF metadata. The rotation is applied first.
